- Eileen Newcombe (née Stansfeld, 1910 - 1980) would have been just two years old when this portrait was drawn by Paul Nash at Iver Heath, the Nash brothers' childhood home and the subject of many of Paul Nash's landscape works. The portrait underscores Paul Nash's ties to the Woman's Suffrage Movement, through his marriage to Margaret Nash (née Odeh) in 1913. Margaret Nash was a prominent Suffragette and one of the founders of the Women's Training Colony in Berkshire, an organisation funded by Millicent Fawcett. By drawing together links to Nash's marriage, and his connection to Buckinghamshire, the present lot provides a remarkable biographical insight into the life of one of Britain's most distinguished landscape painters.
